Daniel Flynn-Becerra of Fullerton passed away on November 14th from complications while undergoing cardiac surgery.  He was 23 years old.  Daniel was born in Fullerton, California at St. Jude Hospital.  Shortly after his birth, Daniel was diagnosed with a cardiac defect, requiring medical intervention and his first surgery at seven days old.  Thus began a life-long journey, including additional open-heart surgeries, procedures, and numerous hospital stays, resulting in limiting physical and neurological disabilities.

From the beginning of his life, Daniel demonstrated resilience and a steadfast will to live.  Despite significant medical obstacles, Daniel defied all statistics and odds, overcoming cardiac arrest just months after his birth.  However, Daniels physical disabilities did not limit his spirit and he continued to lead a full life.

Daniel had a love for music, whether he was listening to his favorite Baby Einstein “Take Along Tunes”, or Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat soundtrack.  He also enjoyed going for long drives, always up for a new adventure.  He visited and explored many places within Southern California, including museums and amusement parks, beaches and piers, including Santa Monica and Balboa, San Diego, traveling down I-15 and many more.  In addition to his many explorations, he also participated at the Therapeutic Riding Center of Huntington Beach.  He loved going for bike rides on his custom bike through his neighborhood and parks.  Daniel became a familiar face throughout his hometown of Fullerton and beyond, and always left a lasting impression on those he met.

Daniel attended many wonderful schools over the years, including George Key, Woodcrest, Nicolas Junior High, Troy High School, La Sierra High School and Adult Transition Program, and Easter Seals in Brea.  Caregivers and educators alike experienced Daniel’s curious mind, mischievous sense of humor, and kind-hearted nature.  Daniel’s signature “high five” is a legacy to his love of people.

Throughout his life, Daniel was blessed to be surrounded by loving caregivers, many of whom became family.  The exceptional medical care Daniel received at Children’s Hospital Los Angels and University of Southern California gave Daniel the opportunity to experience a fulfilling life.  Combined, the friendship, loving care, and validation Daniel’s caregivers and medical teams provided, offered Daniel the opportunity to leave his mark on this world, a mark we will not soon forget.

Daniel is survived by his mother, Maureen Flynn-Becerra, father Daniel Becerra, stepmother Mary Becerra, siblings Dr. Brian Becerra, Brigid Gutierrez (Robert), and Thomas Becerra; nephew Roman Gutierrez, and many cousins, aunts and uncles.

Daniel’s life will be remembered and celebrated on November 30th at Yorba Linda United Methodist Church at 10:00am.  Graveside service at Loma Vista Memorial Park, Fullerton.  Reception immediately following.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the programs Daniel participated in.

  1. I am truly sorry for your loss. It is my hope that God’s promise at John 5:28, 29 will bring comfort and strength to you at this difficult time.

  2. May the God of peace sustain you at this most difficult time, and may your hearts receive comfort from the promise he gives at Job 14:14,15.

  3. Maureen I am so sorry to hear of Daniel’s passing. Taking care of special needs boys
is a blessing, it requires many hours of sleepless nights worry about their wellbeing and development. We love and care for all of our children unconditionally but we love and care for our children who’s medical needs are dependent upon us and without us cannot
survive. We always do the best we can, you have done that with Daniel. May you find peace and comfort in the tremendous love and your special boy!
